PARIS — At VivaTech 2026, global beauty giant L’Oréal and artificial intelligence leader OpenAI announced a historic, multi-layered collaboration aimed at fundamentally reshaping consumer commerce and scientific product formulation through advanced AI networks.

The partnership positions OpenAI as a foundational engineering pillar in L’Oréal’s broader Transformative AI roadmap. The strategy focuses heavily on two main tracks: deploying agentic commerce directly to ChatGPT’s 900 million weekly users, and integrating domain-specific reasoning models into L'Oréal's scientific research laboratories.

1. AI-Native Consumer Journeys & Virtual Try-Ons

The front-end consumer application of this partnership aims to turn conversational prompts into interactive retail environments:

  • Maybelline New York Integration: Maybelline will embed its Makeup Virtual Try-On directly inside ChatGPT. The feature merges L’Oréal’s proprietary ModiFace AR technology with OpenAI’s conversational layer, enabling users to test and visualize cosmetic products in real time via standard text chat.
  • Enhanced Discovery Signals: L’Oréal is modifying its backend data pipelines to pass advanced intent signals to ChatGPT in the USA. This integration guarantees more intuitive, context-aware product discovery paths for luxury and haircare brands including Lancôme and Kérastase.
  • AI-Native Advertising Pilot: Mass-market and dermatological labels CeraVe, Garnier, and SkinCeuticals have officially entered a global ChatGPT ad pilot. The program explores contextual advertising served dynamically at the exact point of consumer purchase intent.

2. Deep Science: Microbiome Mapping via GPT-Rosalind

Behind the scenes, the collaboration extends past general-purpose chatbots into high-stakes biological reasoning. L’Oréal has secured enterprise access to GPT-Rosalind, OpenAI’s purpose-built life sciences reasoning model.

L’Oréal’s research and innovation squads are leveraging GPT-Rosalind’s biochemical reasoning capabilities to map the human skin microbiome at an unprecedented scale. By analyzing millions of microscopic organisms and identifying specific beneficial bacteria strains, the system is designed to drastically accelerate preclinical R&D timelines. The resulting formulations will anchor the next generation of natural, high-efficacy skincare lines, launching first via La Roche-Posay.

Additionally, OpenAI’s underlying generation engines will power CreAItech, L’Oréal’s internal generative media factory. The platform dynamically generates brand-compliant advertising imagery and video assets scaled to individual cultural aesthetics.

The Scale of Enterprise AI Adoption

The partnership highlights how quickly the legacy consumer packaged goods (CPG) sector is morphing into a tech-first operational ecosystem. L’Oréal confirmed that it has already trained over 73,000 global employees in generative AI workflows, equipping its corporate workforce with custom internal assistants like L’OréalGPT and personalized digital companions.

Asmita Dubey, Chief Digital and Marketing Officer at L’Oréal, emphasized the strategic shift:

“At L’Oréal, we believe we can be more demanding of AI to augment our beauty consumers, our metiers such as Marketing and Research and our employees.”
