Nvidia Reveals $21 Billion Stake in SpaceX as Hardware and Equity Ties Deepen
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In a regulatory disclosure underscoring the increasingly intertwined financial relationships across the artificial intelligence sector, Nvidia revealed that it held nearly 123 million shares in SpaceX, valued at almost $21 billion at the end of June 2026.
The position—detailed in an SEC filing—marks a massive windfall stemming from Nvidia’s initial investment in xAI earlier this year, just prior to Elon Musk merging the AI laboratory into SpaceX. Following market swings after SpaceX's June initial public offering (IPO), the stake's valuation has adjusted to approximately $17 billion.
Exclusive Data Center Infrastructure Commitment
The equity disclosure lands directly after Elon Musk announced during SpaceX’s first public earnings call that the aerospace and defense giant has established an exclusive hardware arrangement with Nvidia to outfit its expanding computing infrastructure.
SpaceX is planning an aggressive computing expansion, aiming to scale its operational capacity from 2 gigawatts at the end of this year to between 5 and 10 gigawatts by late 2027.
“We’ve decided to build exclusively on Nvidia because we think [its] Vera Rubin architecture is the best architecture,” Musk stated during the call. “We think it’s the best AI computer and we greatly value our close co-operation and partnership on many levels with Nvidia.”
The Rise of Circular Ecosystem Financing
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has increasingly leveraged the balance sheet of the $5.5 trillion chipmaker to cement strategic alliances, creating an ecosystem where Nvidia serves as investor, supplier, and financial guarantor to its primary enterprise customer base.
Nvidia’s broader infrastructure and investment footprint now includes:
- Direct AI Lab Holdings: Over $100 billion committed across the past two years to AI leaders and specialized compute startups, including CoreWeave, Safe Superintelligence, and Thinking Machines.
- Ecosystem Acquisitions: Backing developer platform Cursor, which was recently acquired by SpaceX in a $60 billion transaction.
- $500B Debt Consortium: Structuring a half-trillion-dollar financing coalition alongside Apollo Global, Blackstone, BlackRock, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR to fund customer data center buildouts, backed by Nvidia-guaranteed hardware loans.
SpaceX's public listing has generated substantial returns across its early backer network. Google, which made a $900 million bet on the company in 2015, holds an approximate 7% stake that was valued at roughly $94 billion in July.
